The Duchess of Cambridge is supporting a new UK-wide drive to help children connect with nature ? as the next generation takes environmental action into their own hands. Backyard Nature aims to build an army of young nature guardians across the UK and help them protect wildlife on their doorstep ??? galvanising communities and empowering the children that live in them to act as nature guardians for their patch, no matter how small. The Duchess of Cambridge said: “Spending time in nature can play a pivotal role in helping children grow up to become happy, healthy adults. The great outdoors provides an open playground for children to have fun and learn life-long skills — from balance and coordination to empathy and creativity — with their friends, their parents, their carers, or their family members. I hope the Backyard Nature campaign inspires children, families and communities to get outside and engage with nature, wherever they live.” The Backyard Nature campaign has committed to encourage and support a million hours spent in the outdoors, encouraging children to connect with the environment and take action. The Duke of Cambridge, President of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, visited The Royal Marsden in Chelsea to learn about the psychological support being offered to staff, patients and their families. The Royal Marsden opened its doors in 1851 as the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education. Now, it is the largest and most comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, treating and seeing over 50,000 NHS and private patients every year. Read below and swipe to see the stories of some of those that he met: 2. Meeting Aly, Matron at the Bud Flanagan Unit. At end of 2017 Aly took time off work with stress, compassion fatigue and depression. Aly said: It was a very upsetting and difficult time, but with the support of my family, GP and The Royal Marsden team, I not only got through it, I came back stronger than ever. 3. With Julie, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014. Following treatment and remission, the cancer came back in 2018 and she received robotic surgery at The Royal Marsden. Julie received psychological support to deal with her relapse and treatment impact, together with speech and language therapy to get her speech and eating back to a ‘new’ normal. 4/5/6. Visiting the Ellis Ward, which specialises in the care of female patients undergoing investigations and treatments for breast, gynaecological, urological and gastrointestinal cancers. 7/8. In January this year, The Royal Marsden announced the sudden death of Professor Martin Gore, who was their Medical Director for 10 years and a Trustee of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The Duke met Professor Gore’s widow, Pauline Gore, and some of his closest colleagues. 9/10. The staff of the Royal Marsden work tirelessly to continue to make a national and global contribution to cancer research and treatment, so that more people are cured and quality of life is improved for those living with cancer. The Duke met staff to thank them for their incredible work. ? Kensington Palace @royalmarsden#RoyalMarsden

? The Duchess of Cambridge hosted a picnic for her patronages in the Back to Nature Garden at #RHSHampton — where she was joined by children from @afnccf, Evelina Children’s Hospital, @actionforchildrenukand @_place2be to explore the garden and experience the positive effects of spending time outside. The Duchess of Cambridge’s RHS Back to Nature Garden has transferred to @The_RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival — the design has the same wild and natural feel but has been developed in order to create further opportunities for children and families to interact with nature. The design for this garden has once again been created through a collaboration between Her Royal Highness, landscape architects @davies_white and the RHS. As part of her longstanding work on Early Years, The Duchess believes that spending time outdoors plays a pivotal role in children’s future health and happiness. Her garden highlights how time spent in natural environments can help build the foundations for positive physical and mental wellbeing that last through childhood and over a lifetime. Features like the hollow log and rustic dens ? have returned from Chelsea, in addition to a new hidden cave, treehouse ?, camo netting, rolling hill ⛰ and stream ?. These environments enable children to develop skills for life through free play, building their confidence, strength, resilience and social skills. In addition to the physical and mental health benefits of being in nature, spending quality time with parents and carers outside has a valuable impact on children’s early development. In the garden, families can explore together and enjoy nature as a playground. There is a pond to paddle in, a bug hotel ? that provides habitats for all sorts of wildlife, as well as a bee-friendly ? wildflower meadow that covers the hill in meadow buttercup, ox-eye daisy, red clover and common spotted orchid.

Ahead of the annual #prideinlondon parade and in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, The Duke of Cambridge visited Albert Kennedy Trust (akt) to learn about the issue of LGBTQ+ youth homelessness, and the positive change that akt are enacting through their unique prevention and early action approach. The Duke met people supported by akt, and spoke to staff about the services they provide including the ‘Purple Door’ safe house, LGBTQ+ ‘host’ (or carer) services, in-person and online mentoring programmes and a range of youth engagement activities. Among the people The Duke met was Faz, an akt Young Ambassador and trans Muslim man. Faz lost his parents when he was younger and was living with extended family, but had to leave home after they reacted badly to him coming out as trans. akt helped support Faz, and he was one of the first people to move into Purple Door. Swipe to see Faz speak about how akt helped him, and see more from The Duke’s visit. Almost one quarter of the 150,000 young people facing or experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ+, and 77 per cent of those cite rejection or abuse from their families as what has led them to being so. akt has provided over 250,000 nights off the street and supported over 50,000 LGBTQ+ young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Today The Duke officially opened akt’s new services centre in Hoxton, which will host drop-in sessions for young people and grow its youth engagement offering. The Stonewall uprising took place in New York on June 28, 1969, and is seen as the moment that sparked the modern LGBTQ+ movement around the world. Pride marches around the world will be recognising the anniversary, including Pride in London, where akt staff and supporters will be marching.@aktcharity #LGBTQ #Pride

? Learning photography is a fun and engaging way to help young people develop confidence and self-expression, and to help develop new skills — today The Duchess of Cambridge joined two of her patronages, Action for Children and the Royal Photographic Society, for a special photography workshop. The Duchess of Cambridge joined Josh, and young people from Action for Children for the sessions run by the Royal Photographic Society, which covered elements of photography including portraits, light and colour. The workshop, run by RPS honorary fellows Jillian Edelstein and Harry Borden, highlighted how photography provides a universal language for young people to express themselves and explore their thoughts and feelings. As part of her longstanding work on early years The Duchess is on a mission to support organisations like Action for Children, that aim to give every child the best possible start in life. Action for Children, who are marking their 150th anniversary this year, are committed to helping vulnerable children, young people, and their families, across the UK. The charity’s 7,000 staff and volunteers operated over 522 services in the UK, improving the lives of 301,000 children, teenagers, parents and carers last year. The Royal Photographic Society, of whom The Duchess today became Patron, is one of the world’s oldest photographic societies. It was founded in 1853 with the objective of promoting the art and science of photography. Her Majesty The Queen passed the patronage to The Duchess, after having held the role for 67 years.@actionforchildrenuk@royalphotographicsociety

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with The Queen and Members of the Royal Family, attended Royal Ascot — today they were joined by The King and Queen of the Netherlands. Royal Ascot is an annual event attended by The Queen, who has had an interest in horses since childhood, and Members of the Royal Family. The week has become Britain’s most popular race meeting, welcoming around 300,000 visitors over five days. Ascot Racecourse was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, and has since received the patronage of a further eleven monarchs. The Ascot summer race meeting officially became a Royal week in 1911. The Queen is owner and breeder of many thoroughbred horses and shares her interest in horses with many members of her family — and The Queen’s own horses have won races at Royal Ascot a number of times. ? The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined The Queen and Members of the Royal Family to attend this year’s Order of the Garter service in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain, established by King Edward III nearly 700 years ago. The Order includes The Queen, who is Sovereign of the Garter, The Duke of Cambridge and several senior Members of the Royal Family, and twenty-four knights or ladies chosen in recognition of their work. Knights of the Garter are chosen personally by the Sovereign to honour those who have held public office, who have contributed in a particular way to national life or who have served the Sovereign personally. Supernumerary, or ‘Stranger’ Knights, are overseas monarchs appointed to the Order, and are in addition to the twenty-four knights or ladies — The King of Spain and The King of the Netherlands attended this year’s Garter Day service, during which they were installed as Supernumerary Knights of the Garter. Earlier in the day The Queen held a private Investiture in the Garter Throne Room at Windsor Castle, where Lady Mary Peters was invested with the Order’s insignia by Her Majesty. During their visit to Northern Ireland in February, The Duke and Duchess congratulated @Olympics gold medallist Lady Mary on her appointment to the Order of the Garter. ? The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of Action on Addiction, attended the first annual gala dinner in recognition of Addiction Awareness Week. Before the dinner, The Duchess of Cambridge met former Action on Addiction clients Jay Otty and Melanie Bennett, who worked to prepare food for the gala dinner. Jay is a key member of the ‘front of house’ staff at @Brink_Liverpool – Action on Addiction’s ‘dry bar’ in the city. He has worked in the hospitality industry for seven years, having now been clean and sober for nine years. Melanie says that Action on Addiction’s Self-Help Addiction Recovery Programme, which taught her coping mechanisms and new behaviours, and started the grieving process for her father which she had been blocking for ten years, helped saved her life. Speaking at the dinner, The Duchess said: “What’s remarkable about Action on Addiction is that it goes beyond helping those who are suffering on the courageous journey into recovery – it also lends direct support to the children and families affected by addiction – for as long as it takes.” Action on Addiction is the only UK addictions charity that works across all the areas of research, treatment, family support and professional education. The aim of Addiction Awareness Week is to provide a platform for focused conversations about the many different facets of addiction, to enable a wide range of organisations to engage with people and families who may be affected by addiction, and to raise public awareness of the far-reaching and negative effects of addiction. The ultimate aim is that as honest but inspirational stories are shared, those affected by addiction will then feel more able to take the necessary steps to access help, hope and freedom from their addiction. @ActionOnAddiction#AddictionAwarenessWeek

Dr Malik Ramadhan is the divisional director of emergency care and trauma at the Royal London Hospital, where 12 casualties from the London Bridge attacks on 3 June 2017 were taken. He was one of scores of doctors, nurses and other staff who were called into work on that Saturday night to treat those injured. Malik was cycling home at 10pm after finishing his shift when he saw large numbers of police cars driving towards central London — after speaking to the London Ambulance Service to find out what was happening, Malik turned around and returned straight back to work. On his role in the response to the attack, Malik said: “I was the resuscitation room commander. I ensured the injured patients had their scans and surgery at the right time and always had the right number of people looking after them. We performed emergency surgery on six patients lasting between an hour and three to four hours.” Speaking on the role of the team, he said: “Everyone rallies around in a crisis; it’s what we’re all built for. The public should know that the NHS and NHS staff are geared up for things like this and that if they do happen they will be looked after to a very high standard.” Today The Duke of Cambridge presented Dr Malik Ramadhan with his OBE for services to Healthcare, at an Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
