This #IWD2019 I want to highlight the brilliance of @laylafsaad. She is no-joke changing the world and, for what it’s worth, the way I live my life. Layla, I hope to meet you someday and thank you in person. Until then, please know my respect and appreciation know no bounds. Please download Layla’s workbook “Me and White Supremacy”, do the work, and check out @goodancestorpodcast. Also, I highly recommend reading the @elleusa article in my bio. Peace xx

This post resonated with me- way to go @zerowastehome- and I wanted to share it with you. It also brought up something for me: I am conflicted about blithely touting a zero waste lifestyle here because I know so much of my ability to even attempt it rests on my privilege. I feel it’s borderline obnoxious for me to promote this lifestyle like everyone has the same access to it that I have- I mean, reusable water bottles are great but not when you live in a community with unsafe drinking water. Buying bulk is not an option when you live in a food desert and have no time. Access is not the same for everyone, and yet I can’t deny that committing to living this way is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have never had a perfect zero waste day. I will never fit five years of trash in a mason jar, but I am not mindlessly filling up landfills at the rate I was either. Just offering my best gives me something to feel good about and, over time, my best has gotten better. No one can do everything but almost everyone can do something. Have you tried adopting any zero waste habits? What’s working for you?

We keep it real around here: some critics get @serenityfilm and, like me, find it interesting, moving, ambitious and different, and for some it just doesn’t work. That’s cool- there is no failure, only learned events, not everyone has to like everything, and the critical response doesn’t change my feelings about the movie. However, other people’s time and money are not to be taken for granted, so I just want to be clear: I endorse the movie, many critics don’t ? Anyway, wasn’t my @givenchyofficial skirt for the premiere rad? ?

Matthew and I are learning our film Serenity isn’t easily broken down into sound bites. I really like movies like that, but just in case I am in the minority, here are some reasons why I think you should see it: I find Serenity to be a thrilling, ambitious, violent, spiritual, erotic, charged, dark, damning, contradictory, maddening, lushly intelligent film from the brilliant mind of Steven Knight. It asks a lot of the audience. It exists outside cut-and-dry, black-and-white moralizing, beyond the realm of “thumbs up” and “thumbs down,” “it sucked,” “it was bad-ass,” etc. It will need some analysis and conversation after. Good. Serenity is a sexy, surreal, modern noir for grown ups who are into things that don’t come standard. If that sounds like you, I hope you’ll consider giving us your time and attention. Thanks for listening xx #SecretsWillSurface @serenityfilm

My country gassed children. There are no words for my horror. To those who will immediately speak of “doing it the right way”, who will “blame the parents for putting the children in this position”, or say “they were storming the wall”, and “they were throwing rocks”: the only human response to this monstrous use of force against LEGAL asylum seekers- against children- is condemnation, shame, and rage. For those that still believe in voting for the man who recommended using lethal force on families fleeing violence and persecution: this is the policy you like? @nytimes

Adam and I join in the worldwide mourning of 11 innocent lives lost in Pittsburgh this weekend. We join in the forceful, worldwide, ongoing condemnation of White Nationalism, Anti-Semitism, and all forms of hate. We reject communities that are formed around the hatred, marginalization, and oppression of any group or religion under the flimsy cover of “free speech”. We are full of sorrow, and we remain unbowed. Our hearts are broken, and we do not despair. We are full of love in the face of hate, as has been asked of us, always. We close our eyes and remember that the message of every great martyr and spiritual teacher has reflected the same truth: the path is clear, long, difficult, and worth it. We open our eyes and see that path which is made of, and has always led to, love. The glory of the soul is our true inheritance. We take the next step together.

Silence is not an option when the stakes are this high, and while the release that comes with posting righteous anger and outrage feels potent, I worry it is proving ineffective at actually reaching those who need to hear the message most. This leaves me no option but to let my anger take a back seat and offer this moment to love. To my trans siblings*: you have given us so much light to guide on the path of love- thank you, from the bottom of my heart. To all the trans children out there: I love you. You matter so much. I can’t wait until you grow up and teach us what comes next. Yes, I speak love here, but make no mistake: all the love and light in the world is nothing without action and justice, and so I will also get out and #VOTE for the rights of Trans Americans, and I will #VOTE against anyone threatening to dim the brightness of our shared future. To anyone rolling your eyes at this issue, or who thinks this doesn’t affect them: wise up, friend. We’re all in this together and the lives of our fellow Americans are under attack from the very top. I know this issue may feel challenging to some of you, but your feelings are not more important than another human’s intrinsic right to freedom and existence.#TRANSRIGHTSAREHUMANRIGHTS#wewillnotbeerased *thank you to those who took the time to clue me into the more appropriate non-binary language. Heard.

I keep thinking how we move through things so quickly these days (how could we not?); I know my personal capacity to absorb something new is often maxed out. For example, a movie opens, we are “obsessed” for a weekend, we move on. I do this too: even when I really love something, I get distracted by the next thing, don’t fully digest the experience and I quickly move on, like the world exists only to entertain me, like great art is unlimited, that my consumption of it as an everyday all-you-can eat buffet is acceptable. We are so fortunate- a ton of worthy, excellent movies are going to come out between now and the end of the year, and our plates are going to become increasingly full. That said, I think A Star is Born is so special, so ambitious, so audacious and so brilliantly human that it shouldn’t just be a news story for one weekend. Even being so excited about what’s coming out, I want to really luxuriate in appreciation for A Star is Born. I saw this film back in August at the Venice Film Festival and I still walk around feeling lucky I was in that audience. This film surprised me in the best possible way; it even killed some cynicism that I didn’t know had snuck into my heart. I loved it. I hope you see it. Bravo @ladygaga. Bravo #bradleycooper.Thank you. Encore ?

Update: To all the men and women who are asking “what about boys”? There is a historic, seismic imbalance between the investment in girls and boys worldwide, especially when it comes to education, with boys overwhelmingly reaping the lion’s share of the reward. In a great deal of the world, educating girls is wrongfully seen as a waste of resources. Programs like this are aiming to level the playing field and evolve the outdated, all-too-common view that boys are more valuable than girls into one of inclusion and equality. I am proud to support any program or way of thinking that seeks to provide this kind of inclusivity and balance. The current reality is that girls need our help because of this generations-old imbalance, and this push towards equality is being done without excluding boys. I appreciate your intent, but this type of “whatabout-ism” is upholding an incredibly harmful and unfair status quo (which I can only hope is the opposite of what you want.) All the best, Annie — Love and support everything about this. When girls receive an education, amazing things start to happen: poverty goes down. Economies grow. Families get stronger. Babies are born healthier. And the world, by all accounts, gets better. That’s why on the International #DayoftheGirl, I’m proud to join @MichelleObama and the @globalgirlsalliance to stand up for adolescent girls’ education—because the future of our world is only as bright as our girls.

I found myself outside a fire station ceremony first thing this morning and have been unsuccessfully trying to put my feelings into words since. I can think of no better way to describe what I am feeling than Robert Schwarzman has done here, and so it is my bittersweet pleasure to share his thoughts with those of you who may not have already read them. #Repost @robertschwartzman I was living in NYC and attending the New School in September 2001. I stayed at a hotel in Soho the night of September 10th, and woke up to the news that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. The news didn’t know what to make of it and began to speculate. Then news of the second plane was announced and it was more clear what had taken place. I walked outside the hotel, turned towards downtown, and could see the two smoking towers in the distance. I accompanied the hotel staff to pickup some extra flashlights and batteries at the local market. When I returned to the hotel, the buildings were no longer standing. The feeling around NYC that resonated and sustained for months following this event was one of pure and genuine connection. Everything and everyone felt so in tune and in sync, like you were standing with strangers who felt no different than your family. I’m currently in NYC and walking these streets 17 years later is bringing this all back. It’s surreal to think that this monumental event actually happened and how much time has passed. Thinking back to that feeling of unity, I can’t help but think about this feeling of separation and division that plagues our country right now. I believe there’s more love than hate in us, more connection than division, more friends than enemies. I want to believe it shouldn’t have to take events like this to get to this place of connection, that it’s always present when we want to embrace it. It’s hard to keep things in perspective once the dust settles, but memories and history continue to remind us of the beauty we’re capable of. Today we remember as a city, as country, and as a planet.

“We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe. We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been.” With respect and gratitude to Senator John McCain, a true Maverick. Rest In Peace.

Respect, @rmorrison— and congrats! #femalefilmmakerfriday #Repost@rmorrison There’s a common misconception that likens pregnancy to some kind of disability— the idea that women who are pregnant shouldn’t be active and can’t go about their normal lives… While no two pregnancies are the same, I just want to say that for many to most women this isn’t the case at all. I just wrapped a feature #againstallenemies at 8+ months pregnant. Now I’m on to a commercial and I plan to keep shooting for as long as anyone will hire me knowing in a few weeks I may have to replace myself if I go into labor on set… the point is I am NOT a superhero. I am just going about my life doing the thing that I love for as long as I can because the more I work before baby the longer I can take off after. Which should also be MY choice and no one else’s. Physically speaking I could have gone back to work within a week of having my son. At the time, I lost many jobs because people were nervous to hire me so soon after the birth but again I say this should be left up to us. Pregnancy and motherhood in general is not a disadvantage and the craft doesn’t suffer as a result. If anything the added experience and enhanced empathy has made me a better cinematographer and filmmaker. That’s all. Happy Friday! #femalefilmmakerfriday #shootfilm#cseries #panavisionofficial ? by @loganwhitephoto

I apologize for this messiness. Earlier today I thought I was ready to post something else, but I am not. I am still heart sick over the murder of Nia Wilson and it feels wrong to post something else so soon. All my love and respect for everyone I mentioned in my deleted post stands- but I want to hold the space for Nia for longer. Again, I’m sorry.
The murder of Nia Wilson- may she rest in the power and peace she was denied here- is unspeakable AND MUST NOT be met with silence. She is not a hash tag; she was a black woman and she was murdered in cold blood by a white man. White people- including me, including you- must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS. White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves- how “decent” are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action? Peace and prayers and JUSTICE for Nia and the Wilson family xx Note: the comments for this post are closed. #blacklivesmatter#antiracist #noexcuse #sayhername#earntherighttosayhername
POSE on FX is my new favorite show. Two episodes ago the always excellent Billy Porter left my jaw on the floor with his performance, one of the best I have ever seen on TV- happily I can’t get it out of my mind. He stands out amongst an inspiring and revelatory cast. Do yourself a favor- see what really makes America great and tune in. A note: the LGBTTQQIAAP community is beautiful, loved, worthy and my family. I only welcome words of love and support to them. If you do not yet possess any, offer your silence.
